My Dad is going to be driving through Canada next month on his way to Alaska. He would like to know if anyone knows what papers he need to get so he can bring his dog with him through Canada? She is an American pit, if that matters. He is taking her to the vet to get all of her shots updated, but does he need some sort of heath certificate? Thanks all!

Last time I came into Canada with a dog all I needed was a rabies certificate.

Google "Canada Customs" or Canada Customs and Revenue" and look there for information. They will have a contact address for you.

Sorry I am pressed for time or I would do it for you.

For heavens sake - tell him this socialistic country will give him huge probs if he tries to bring a long or short gun with him. I have had personal horrible experiences with it. It's tough enough to be an owner here.

Leave them at home.

Hope he enjoys the trip - no wandering off the highway through northern country - he is part of the food chain. Animals everywhere - watch out - the moose, elk, caribou, deer, buffalo are big / everywhere - and very stupid. Bears are overly "friendly" - DO NOT BE FOOLED! Especially on the A.H. - which by the way my grandfather helped build.

I traveled it every month - once a month for almost three years.

Enjoy the passes and the goats - he will see lots. Bring a fishing rod!

He was planning on bringing his guns to go hunting in Alaska, he will be there 6 months. Is there any way to bring them across the border if you are just passing through?

As someone who hunts and fishes in Canada fot the last 15 years let me offer you a little advice.
1. Have those guns shipped UPS or someother delivery service. Period, end of story.
2. No rader detection devices, I saw a Mounty rip a guys dash open to remove a rader detector.
3. No pepper spray
4. And if he is driving in with Texas plates, expect to have his mode of transportation searched throughly, that also goes for Arizona plates as well, basically any right to carry state cars will be searched.
5. Turn your lights on during the day driving, its a dead give away that your from the US if those lights arent on
6. Watch your speed, its tempting, but it aint worth it to speed up there
As a whole my driving and traveling experiances have been great traveling Canada, remember you aint in Texas.
p.s. Be sure to tell em you dont wont gravey on those french fries...or you can end up getting hooked on having em served that way, as I did.

They wont allow pistols into Canada, period. I have had several friends who had a pistol in the truck when they crossed the border. The pistols were taken from them and never returned. It is a lot easier to ship guns up than it is to take them across the border. Be sure and take his passport. I went up there last year for a one day workshop and had a tough time getting back in to the US without a pasport.
One way to avoid the hassle at the border is to get on the ferry in Washington rather than driving up to Prince Rupert. More expencive but less hassle.

Thanks to all for the replys!

He is going to try to get on the ferry but he doesn't have an exact date he will get there so he can't book it in advance. His partner has a time reserved on the ferry and he will be taking all of the guns.

He will be pulling an enclosed trailer with all of his carpentry tools onboard (nail guns, saws, table saw, ect) Will there be a problem with any of that stuff?

Sorry I'm asking all of these questions, we just don't know about this stuff, last time he flew up there.

I wouldn't think that tools would be a problem. If he is pulling a trailer he will want to drive to Prince Rupert and catch the ferry there. You pay for passage based by length on the ferry and it would cost a lot more to take a pickup and trailer all the way up from Washington. Without reservations he may end up having to wait a couple of days in Prince Rupert. If memory serves me right not all the boats that stop at Rupert and Ketchikan also stop at Hollis. So he needs to get on the right boat or he will get stuck in Ketchikan for another day or two. As much of a tourist town as Ketchikan has turned into he is probably better off staying in Rupert until he can catch the right boat.

It would be good to have receipts for all of the expensive stuff to make dealing with customs easier. It will also look like he is going to Canada for business purposes and he will have trouble unless he's got an easy way to convince them he's just passing through. He is doing many things that will flag him for closer checks. Just the fact that he is going to hunt in Alaska will make them check him close at the border.

Here's the Canada Customs website link:

As mentioned above, firearm transportation can be a ticklish issue for people entering Canada. For an idea of what he'll be dealing with, I've posted a link to Ontario's Travel Tips page regarding firearms. Best for him to get his ducks in a row, so to speak, where his guns and permits are concerned.

If he's looking for a friendly face, PM me with his travel itinerary, as my hometown is at the beginning of the Alaska Hiway. Would be glad to show him the sights, if we're not caught up with haying or some such activity. Coffee's always ready to brew, and new friends are always welcome.

Take care and wish him a enjoyable visit.
