Contrary to what you may have heard: Chocolate milk does not come from brown cows!!

Next you'll be trying to tell us that having horns indicates a boy cow and not having them means a girl cow

Cool...I knew there was a good reason I want Herefords...

Now, that might be true, Dun -- but you and I just don't know it! I see Craigslists ads for "Cow bull for sale," or a "Steer cow for sale," and once you get into the ad, it may be a cow or it may be a bull, or it may be a steer -- but most of them have horns.

Had a guy want to lease one of my pastures for his heifer steers a couple of years ago so he could train cow dogs. I only understood half of what he said.

Heard this here before

first calf heifers, are females that have given birth to their first calf.

first calf steers are sorta the same, cepts they are casterated males who have given birth to their first calf

We all know neither of these to be possible in the real world, but it is possible at CT.

If you don't like what you see here . . . . you could leave! We wouldn't miss your mouth.
Anybody want to vote on that?

Re:

FYI: That is a true statement!
And there are "second calf heifers" also.
And in between those two are "proven heifers", after she has breed back.
I think he is

Sirloin,
I am not sure if you are serious here or if this in jest or tongue in check.
So if you are serious.....dead wrong!!!
A heifer is only a heifer until the calf passes the canal. From then on she is a cow!
She is a heifer, a bred heifer or if she did not get bred first time around and is two+ to preg check, she can be known as a heiferette (maybe that is a Canadian term). However, once she has had a calf no longer is she a heifer, but a cow. She grew up, became a mother and is now a Cow and only known as a cow.
second calf heifer...is a cow
proven heifers...are cows...and only cows.
Lets not confuse the Beginners

OooK. That is a pretty strong statement but I am dead serious!
Now let me try to explain it to you with out my usual sarcasm.

M Webster:
Definition of HEIFER
a young cow; especially: one that has not had a calf
Do you see the words "a young cow"?
"a young cow" can includes through a first and second birth, can it not?

Here are some example:
sss-mag.com/fernhill/cowsales.html - Block all sss-mag.com results This page highlights our sale cattle. ... We have the following cattle for sale at this time: Cows and Heifers .... First calf heifer - Bred cow or Three-in-One package
www.genewoodsauctionserviceinc.com/upcoming.htm Directions: Sale to be held at Jack Wood's Auction Barn, located on Taylor Valley Rd, Cincinnatus, NY-2 miles north ... (28) Head, (18) Mature cows & (10) Open heifers. ... (10) are 1st calf heifers, with some good 2nd calf heifers in this group. …

Let me know if you are still not comprehending this.

Yes I see the words "young cow"....and no it can not

A heifer is a heifer until she has her first calf.... Then she becomes a young cow. Never the less she is a cow The dividing line is the calf.

Before a calf...she is a heifer...after a calf...she is a cow
Simple and too the point
