foaming at the mouth

I had a bottle raised calf that was 3 months old and already weaned. She started foaming at the mouth. Her diet was hay grazer and two feeds for weaning calves. She never acted sick or quit eating and drinking. I gave her 4 1/2 cc of LA 200 the next 2 days. She acted just like always. I found her dead last night. Has anyone ever heard of this? What could it be?

I've had a cow foaming at the mouth and chewing non-stop after getting a piece of bale string caught in her mouth. I was able to fish it out though. I've never heard of one killed by it though. but I guess it could be possible.

Don't know the conditions under which you raised the calf and whether or not the hay grazer was fresh or hay, but one thing I would do is spent $10 or so for a forage test of the hay grazer. If grown in a drought stressed environment it is common for hay grazer (and related grasses, milo, corn, etc) to contain toxic levels of nitrates and/or prussic acid --- both of which can be pretty quickly fatal to bovines. May help you avoid further losses.

My first two thoughts would be a poisonous substance or a pneumonia so bad the lungs filled up with fluid and caused the foaming. Definitely look at the available forage. Sorry you lost your calf.
