I just bought a couple of fly blocks to put out, The cows ran out of salt about a week ago. Should I wait a couple of days to put out the fly blocks?
(I also bought regular blocks). I don't want them to devour the fly blocks and get overloaded with pesticide.

I also bought 40% pyrethrin concentrate, Is there any thing else that works better? I have been using 10% and it doesn't seem to help much.

When I was a kid we used something that stunk and seemed to work real well, I can't even smell Pyrethrin. Bad sinuses I guess.

It shouldn't make any difference. We use Rabon blocks for fly control along with CrystalX tubs for the heifers and loose mineral for the cows. Never had a problem with them over-ingesting the Rabon blocks even when they were out of tubs/mineral for a few days. If you aren't happy with the blocks, you might check into fly predators. I've never used them, but I know people who have that swear by them. Also, depending on your set up, Pirannha fly spray is absolutely killer when it comes to despensing with flies. They have an automatic sprayer system that looks pretty darn good. The biggest disadvantage to Pirannha is that it is sold through a distributor, not stores. We use it on our horses, and it will drop flies almost instantaneously.

You should spend less time worrying about flies and more time worrying about your cows other needs...letting cows be out of salt for a week this time of year is not good..hope they have mineral

Yes the flies are a problem, but around here the minerals are extremely important. Each one of the basic minerals provide for a certain purpose. For instance: The color of the cows coat depends on Copper. All of them serve a purpose and right now in May, they need them. Here HiMag is really important for grass Tetany.....I give both blocks sometimes, but the cows may or may not eat the Fly block as fast. If flies get too bad, there are sprays, tags, and rubs....Good luck!!!

Early spring we start loose mineral w/"altosid" (trademark name of fly stop). It is 10% mag & 25% salt. Don't put out any other salt. Have to start early to get jump on horn flies. This product doesn't help with regular face flies.
