first time to sell at auction

Help Support CattleToday:

Thats a really dandy calf...Red Angus? If you've won the weaning battle & have the resources to keep him until slaughter date, I'd eat him. BTW...smart to finally put him in with companions. Isolation causes all kinds of problems.

Good for you!! Also, keep in mind the nose weaners can be helpful for a small breeder.
On the comment about the net wrap. You might not be aware, but all the cattle will peck at it and EAT it. It can cause MAJOR problems for cattle. Yes, a mature cow and a big weaned calf can get a small piece eaten and pass it right thru, but all too often it gets tangled up and stays. Pretty soon they have a ball of twine/net wrap and can't fit anything else in their stomach and will starve to death. this is not an exaggeration. Happens all too often.
And, yes - calf looks really good.

Agree with most everyone's advice. We cut the net wrap and usually unwind it off the bale before going in the gate or the cows are a pain getting in the way. Don't know how you handle your hay, if on a spear or on a bale bed on the truck, but either you can hold it up enough to get it unwrapped. Had a calf get some one time and almost died cuz it wasn't getting enough to eat. And yep, cows and calves will do stupid stuff....
The weaning flap works good for some and have had a couple learn to suck around it. But it helps some.

Looks like you got the problem solved and will have a real nice beef next fall. Best of luck.
