Put my first roll of hay out to my bred heifer group this morning. Two had pushed so hard reaching through the fence they broke two strands of barbed wire ( it was a patched place so they didn't do anything major ) Even with rain it's not a month till our first frost so not going to get much growth on grass . This is really going to cut it close on our hay #'s.

Earliest year to start hay yet for us. Been a week or 10 days so far. We just got a days rain, first since July 2nd. Our unlucky streak is broke, for now. Just a lil sunshine and then hope for the best. Maybe another rotation or 2 is in the future.

Thought I had plenty of hay but in the same boat. Should buy a few bales now while it's cheap I guess instead of risking it being higher this winter if no rain continues. Or possibly reduce the herd.

Put out 2 for the commercial cows and Hereford's . We cut a field that had not been cut in several years . Rolled the grass and skipped the briars. They jumped on it . Didn't really plan on having these 13 rolls so this won't affect my hay count . This farm has had the least amount of rain of any of our pastures.

Took some stuff down to the burn pile yesterday morning. First time the gals paid any attention to me while in the pasture. They did t come running but were vocal enough for me to know they weren't all that happy. I've got lots of grass it's just not green and fresh any more.

Grass is burning up here. Getting real crisp.
I've been haying for a couple weeks now. But I'm way overstocked with cows that'll sell in 3 weeks! Then it's gonna look naked for a bit.

Haven't made a sale in a couple weeks. Made it yesterday and things have changed a lot. Very little packer activity on short bred cows where anything 6 month bred and under would go to slaughter, not so yesterday. Top slaughter cow that would bring ~$1.50 a couple weeks ago brought ~$1.10 yesterday. I think we have missed the sweet spot if one wanted to cull. Might be able to pick up some to bring home now, but in my opinion, nothing of quality came through yesterday.

How dry it's been....

Just unrolled one this morning. I am usually able to drop it on a hill multiple times and make 3 or 4 windrows down the hills for them to feed on for 2 or 3 days at a time. It was so dry when it was rolled that it only made it to the bottom one time. It completely fell apart before it hit the bottom.

I noticed the same thing today!
Tried to buy a nice 5 yr old 4 months bred. She went for less than 1700

I did buy a black pair with a little bull calf at $1350 old one done cow. But very good condition. The calf will bring what I gave for the pair. They'll be money makers.

Fortunately I've got more hay than I can say grace over. Feeling very fortunate here lately!
