Finishing with sweet feed

Help Support CattleToday:

We just butchered a Longhorn/Herford cross steer a month ago that graded high Choice. We pasture them as yearling and then feed for 120 days on barley using peas or canola meal as protein. Start feeding 5 pounds a day and during the last month feed all the grain the will consume, they are on pasture and hay during this time.

We finish on cracked corn and alfalfa...start adding the corn at 90 days (5lbs) and increasing it to 15-20 lbs before processing. Keep on the hay right up to the finish, so that they get 25+ lbs of feed per day. The October team is getting 8-10 lbs of corn which will increase to12lbs next week in addition to 18-20% alfalfa (15-20 lbs). Always finish a bit on the lean side with good marbling and great flavor....Herefords and Baldies this quarter. Dave Mc

Bobg....have you fed pea pellets from the lentil growers assoc? I fed a couple cwt a while back, cows loved them but I worried about the lack of minerals (calcium) so didn't buy any more. Dave Mc
