Just finished putting out fertilizer last week. I know that some of you haven't gotten to this point yet because of weather conditions, but figured almost everyone that is going to fertilize has checked on prices.
We used 17/17/17 that was $250/Ton. 13/13/13 price was $210/Ton, 10/20/10 was $202/Ton. After 1st cutting we will go back with ammonium nitrate that was $250/Ton. All these are up in price from last year in our area.

You amy not be able to but sometimes you can preperchase if you have a large enough order. Get in on a contract.

A lot of the farmers in my area use chicken litter. One application seems to work all year through but it is getting harder to apply here because of phosphorus level bulid up in the soil.

fertilizer is all petroleum based. gas goes up, you can bet fertilizers will too. Agree w/ the turkey or chicken manure if you can put up w/ the stench. If there are any local dairies around see if these guys will sell you some manure cheap to spread. Most of them need to find homes for it.

Why is there such a reliance on triple component fertilizers? Adding the extra fertilizer that isn't required besides costing money also can help contribute to lowering the ph of the soil. Gets to be a viscious circle eventually.

my guess is that it is easy, and a lot of times people dont have a current soil test to fine tune their needs...

but you are right.. and a soil test can save many $$ by putting out exactly what is needed..
