i have just put up a electric fence and installed the charger it is battery operated and uses a 12v battery i used car battery for the battery does anyone know or have an idea of about how long it will last before it needs to be recharged or get a new one

Depends on the battery, depends on the charger. A ddep cycle will last a little longer then a starting type battery. If it has a solar panel that changes the whole picture

Mine used to last about 2 weeks, that was with a 6500 volt charger

I could tell you to grab the wire every morning to check - but .....

It depends on a whole bunch of things. Wire, wire length, fencer, and so on.

Buy another battery.

Change them out once a week.

Trickle charge the one you pull off the fence.

Use marine batteries or RV batteries as they are designed to be recharged over and over.

Car batteries hate being dead and then recharged.

I would estimate 2 to 3 weeks for a car battery in the summer.
I would estimate 4 to 6 weeks for a deep cycle battery in the summer.

Keep leaving it on the fence longer and longer until you get to where the charger tells you it is down.

The only problem is if you let the battery get run way down in the winter it will freeze and break in the north land.
