Just need a little direction. I'm just looking to start a small cattle operation. I have 110 acres in Northeast KS, and was looking for a comparison of starting a small feedlot, or running my own stock. What seems to be more profitable, ie, feeders, cow/calf, etc. Thanks for any help. Bryant

Bryant,

For my situation in the TX Panhandle, a stocker operation (winter grazing on wheat pasture) turned out to be the most profitable. Keep in mind that if you run a true feedlot you will have to deal with a lot of EPA paperwork if your operation has any size. If you are small enough that you can avoid this you will have a hard time competing with the big feed lots because you will not have the necessary purchasing power. (buying cheaper in bulk)
