Anyone have any idea how much a steer eats while he is in the feedlot? (% of body weight, # of feed a day, etc). I am trying to figure feed costs associated with feeding out steers so I can price next years steers accordingly. Thanks

Yeah but they sure didn't win any awards for adg.

It takes lots more energy to put on a pound of fat than it does a pound of muscle.

There was a bull on test one year (I won't mention breed - ) that was gaining just as fast as the bigger (larger framed) bulls but was eating about 35 lbs per day plus hay.

In the end he had almost 2 inches of backfat and his conversion ratio was at 10:1.

He was one of your so-called "Easier Fleshing" bulls.

Typically a steer will eat 2.23bs dry matter per 100 lbs body weight. Here is an example of one of the rations I feed. Pretend we are feeding a 550 lbs steer
whole corn 7.58 lbs 85% dm 6.43lbs dm
wdg 6 lbs 50% dm 3lbs dm
corn syrup 3.6 lbs 40%dm 1.44
alfalfa hay 3.15 lbs 89%dm 2.80
total 13.67 lbs dm
Plus an additional .5 lb mineral, vitamins, bovatec

A 550 lbs steer at 2.23lbs/100 body weight requires 12.65lbs dm/day. So my ration is a lb overfed but I may be wrong on moistures. My price for a 550lbs steer for feed is right at .79 a day. 1050lb steer cost me 1.46/day been getting just over 3.3 adg on the top 90% of a group. The tailenders average 2.7
