Has anyone fed yeast with mineral or in the grain? I was talking with a freind this past weekend and he has been feeding yeast with the mineral. He claims that the cows digest more of the feed and have fewer health problems. does anyone know where I can find more info on this?

We have diamond V yeast added to our feed ration all the time. I've never had it added to the mineral. My husband is a nutritionalist, so I leave that up to him, but, seems like the yeast is to keep the rumen balanced on a grain diet. Don't think there is any need for it on grass, but just my guess. Thanx jeane, I am going to try it when we wean calves this fall. We might add it to the grain instead of the mineral pat

Somewhere in the last hundred years, I was told that if I added yeast to my dogs' feed, the insect problem would be lessened. Hadn't thought of that for YEARS -- mostly because I don't usually have dogs. I wonder if it would have the same effect on cattle? 'Twould be interesting to find out, eh?

Just talked to my husband. He says you can only put yeast in the mineral mix if it is going to be consumed within 7 days of mixing because the salt kills the yeast. Yeast feeds the good bugs, that are "stressed" on a heavy grain diet. No problem with bugs on a grass/hay diet. I knew it was something like that but I'm not the nutritionalist - I don't clog my brain with more info than I need to know.
