In northwest WA what is best to feed over the winter I bout some loco hay in Toledo WA but my cows don,t seem to keep there wight up very good I been pouring molasses on it and giving them some grain but not doing well, so I bout some bales of alfalfa from my loco feed store and they love that. How do you all do it out here?

Often western Washington hay is harvested when it is too ripe. Hay cut after the fourth of July because someone is waiting for dry weather will be low in protein and TDN. When I have that type of feed I generally supplement it with a couple of pounds of grain or feed about 5 pounds of alfalfa along with the local hay.

With the lack of available hay and the good stuff selling for $250 a ton, we have been feeding some feeder hay that we got a real good deal on and have been supplimenting with the good alfalfa. The gals that started loosing condition got culled, sold some good cows but kept the ones that can handle a moderate diet.
We feed grain when the temps get down below 10 degrees.
