It isn't just a matter of quantity of grass, it's quality. Some classes of cattle require higher levels of nutrition then others. A cows digestive system is designed for converting lower quality roughage and grain isn't required. Too much grain can actually cause them to not be able to process forage as efficiently and can cause more problems then not feeding any grain. The basic requirements for cattle are water, forage (grass/hay), minerals and obviously oxygen.
