feed ration

We run a cashcrop operation (small) and have a herd of cow/calves. Poor weather conditions last year gave us a shortage of good quality hay and it is expensive to buy up here. We have some corn and soya beans in storage and are considering feeding them to the cattle. The beans are raw. Does anyone have any suggestions on what the mixuture should be and are there any precautions using soya beans. We could purchase some oats cheap enough locally to add to the ration if necessary. We have a couple of 4H projects we want to feed too - will they require anything special or can we feed them the same ration.<p>thanks<p>

You will want to feed the cows about 4 pounds of corn and 1 pound of soybeans. The beans will need to be crushed for the cows to get the benefit from them. They will still need roughage, but low quality hay or straw will work with the grain.<p>Your 4H calves will need a bit more grain, they can go to 15 to 20 pounds of corn (slowly) and maybe an extra pound of soybeans if the hay is low protien.<p>Jason Trowbridge<br>Southern Angus Farms<br>Alberta Canada
