Exploring the options for finishing fair steers. Don't want the kids to commit to a project that has no potential for profit.
Currently feeding whole corn, Nutreena 41% beef pellets(1-1/2 lbs/day) and grassy hay. This years steers leave in a couple weeks so I'm not worried about them but next year could be a different story. Corn could be pricey and I'm wondering if there's any other rations that would give us comparable gains yet might be less expensive. Our fair isn't a real high dollar market sale so feeding some of the more "exotic" show feeds isn't an option. Pretty much wide open to try other feeds though. Maybe there's nothing that works as well but we are looking at doing budgets w/the kids soon and we need to explore all options.
Thanks.

If you have the ability to get feed mixed at the mill and store it in bulk you can save money. Barley can be used in the place of corn, I believe that Canada uses barley to finish cattle; cost might be the same though.
Here is a link to a custom mix that I have seen that might help.
