I heard that the amount of barley being feed has gone down as the corn belt moved north and west. Where does barley fit best in low cost rations?

I have no idea, but as a compliment to you, you ask some of the best questions on here. Cost of gain, return on investment, etc and so on. I hadn't heard those words since college. Makes me want to try harder.

From college animal nutrition class about 45 years ago it was taught that barley was worth about 95% of the value of corn.

95% of corn, and a whole lot cheaper to grow. Makes for nice white fat too. I use it for 1/4 of my ration.

Good ingredient with more protein than corn and a little less energy but still excellent. Only drawback down this way is cost so it's seldom used in anything except horse feeds and a few show calf feeds.
