Farm Use placard needed in Virginia 7/1/24

Help Support CattleToday:

The Farm Vehicle tag can supposedly be used for "limited non-farm use", and even Farm Use tags can be used for basic necessities (grocery store, church, etc) if it's your only vehicle.

You can get a regular Commercial Truck tag with a GVW well over 10k, it's almost exactly twice the cost of the Farm Vehicle tag but carries no restrictions on personal use.

And what plate did you have on your Dodge with the red fuel in it? It's perfectly legal to run in Farm Use vehicles.

It wasn't a farm use. Was either like this or the commercial T truck plate. Yes i was guilty.

Show me something saying i can use red fuel in a farm use vehicle of any type. You might have already just done it.

End of the day what they are trying to crack down on is the cars and trailers that are so obviously not farm use vehicles, particularly the ones that are not road worthy. If your stuff is in decent repair and legitimate farm use they won't mess with you in 99% of the VA localities. Nothing ticks me off more than seeing some POS car pull in at the corner store so some meth head can get his 40 for the evening. Beat all to hell and half the lights missing running a Farm Use tag and the only heifer he has is the 400# woman in the drivers seat.

Check out the CDL requirements.
Most 20ft cattle traikers have a GVWR of 10,000lb. Lots of use go out of state. I do almost weekly. I have CDL but most don't.
Edit, the 150 miles or more saves most people.
Actually a log book is not required on Commercial trucks if not more than 150 miles from their home business lot.

I totally agree with this being the big problem here.

Correct.

I'd suggest that you print a copy of this cheat sheet from Farm Bureau and keep in the glove box of each vehicle, so you can argue your point if need be.

Linky thingy
Yes i definitely will.
DMV has decent people here but lots of this im not sure they understand.
My truck with the Farm Use plate is rarely unhooked from the cattle trailer so pretty easy to say its 100% farm use. Using red fuel in VA saves about .40 a gallon so that would help.

Ahmmmm... How do you get around the paragraph just above the posted link? The one that says dyed fuel can't be used in a vehicle designed for highway use.

I still say somebody dropped a dime on you on that deal, especially given that it was sitting in a parking lot broke down. I don't mess around on dyed fuel, it is to easy to check and hard to talk your way out of. The cumulative fines get pretty steep in a hurry as well.

All that CDL info. you posted is where things get dicey around here.

I thought you looked guilty from the moment I met you!;)
I was once in a conversation with some farmers talking about using dyed fuel in trucks and one farmer says that he heard the new truck don't work with dyed fuel and another one pipes up with a smirk on his face and says "oh yes they do". 😂

So what does this mean? Can we run out to the grocery store or convenience store w farm use trucks now?!

46.2-673. (Effective July 1, 2024) Return trips of exempted farm vehicles.

registration fee for any farm vehicle exempted from registration under the provisions of this article when

1. Making a return trip from any marketplace;

employees, and other products for home and farm use while engaged in activities allowed in this chapter;
or
3. Transporting supplies to the farm.
The owner or lessee of a pickup or panel truck or sport utility vehicle claiming the exemption provided

Do you know any actual farmer who has ever been harassed for driving a Farm Use truck (that looks like a legitimate farm truck) to the store? Or anywhere else for that matter?

2 good points, actual farmer and legitimate farm truck.
In my community, less say 3 miles in every direction, i cannot think of another Farm Use plate thats legitimate farm use. Im sure there may be one except my cattle truck but i can't remember it. Lots of farm plates at the beer store a mile away every afternoon.

I was stopped once on the way to test cows at a farm, and the state cop was being an %%%, because he said I was not doing MY farm business... BUT, I was in the right because I had several bags of feed that I had gotten for MY farm, and went to the other farm on the way home... Yeah, I went to court over the "ticket" he wrote me... he was splitting hairs and got his come uppance over it.
That said, I heard about 2 different LEGITIMATE farmers that were both ticketed by a sheriff's deputy when they stopped at a convenience store for drinks, while out checking cattle at different pastures... another harassment thing, but it showed where the farm use thing was being abused by people that did not have legitimate farm use on their vehicles.

There's been talk for a bit that they were going to require that a farmer go get plates at DMV and have to show a "farm schedule" on their taxes..... that would have taken care of 90% of the ones "that think they are priviledged" to put farm use on their nice pickups to take the trash to the dumpster, and the ones driving their falling apart trashy cars to get their next "fix" from their dope supplier...
I think this is the best compromise they came up with. I don't mind paying the $15 plate fee to drive my no titled old 4x4 ranger a couple miles to the feed store and down the road to a pasture to check cows... or even to the store in the winter while I am out doing stuff. This also allows those of us that have an SUV.... like my subaru forester.... that I carry grain in the back to go feed, because this keeps the cows from getting their heads into the buckets like they do with the feed in the back of the little pickup... and is better on gas than to constantly drive a bigger vehicle.
And yes, I carry insurance on my vehicles that are just "farm use"... only smart to do so with the other idiots on the road nowadays.

I printed off and carried the statutes as they used to be, in my truck years ago... just to be on the safe side.

I am glad they did not go with the plate requirement on every trailer... lord, that would have been something of a nighmare with the trailers we have that get used a couple times a year...or the big trucks that get used to haul cattle to town or crops to the co-op for a week in the fall...

And upping the mileage to 75 miles was nice... it has bounced around over the years and the last 30 or 35, miles was not enough with so many farming or pasturing land farther and farther away...

Technically yes, you can go to the store for groceries and such... but the way it is written it SHOULD be done on a trip back to the farm from doing other legitimate business for the farm. Even to go to the hospital for emergency care etc.
The thing that I think they should have done, is include the requirement for a farmer to show his "legitimate farm tax form"... to get the permanent farm plates.... then if you claim farm income of any sort, you are a legit farmer by law... thus afforded the right to legit farm use on a vehicle...

Be glad that you don't have the laws they have where my folks were in NH and VT... My dad had a liscense plate on his BACKHOE, and farmers have to have a license on their farm tractors to CROSS the road from one field to another... maybe that is why there are not the groups of Mennonites and Amish in those states...

Not much. I've just heard stories of state troopers harassing farmers, some seem like they were deserving the attention. A neighbor of our who also works for the sale barn in Harrisonburg got a ticket for stopping at a convenience store w farm use plates.

And @farmerjan I've also toyed with buying a Subaru their 4wd is top notch but I can't seem to find one with a manual trans
