farm ID numbers

they are pushing real hard here i WV. Alot of people have there card and number all ready. I was curious because i talked to a breeder in ohio and he told me that he has not heard anything about it yet.

Voluntary right now in Missouri. I think next year it will be mandatory but could be wrong. I was out of town when the MFA had some meetings on the subject early this year. They sell the tags so they were wanting everyone to know about them. I've got a website written down somewhere or another that allows me to sign up on-line and get my farm ID number if I felt like doing it now. Gonna put it off though till it does become mandatory.

In the UK every farm has a 'holding number', in addition every herd has a herd number. All cattle have to be individually identified with a unique number and have two ear tags, they are also issued with a passport. Every movement on or off a holding has to be registered by law, backed up with heavy fines.
Its called traceability and itll be coming your way soon.

When it becomes mandatory you may have to pay to get the ID.

Hmmmm. we have to get a farm or ranch id number, cattle have to have a id number, so it just makes we wonder. Why is it that USDA, the packers, and NCBA seem to think it will be so much trouble to implement COOL? Seems that if they have all that information at their fingertips, that labeling would be a snap. It seems to me to smell like a rat, always has, and I am afraid that it will continue to be so.
