Fall calving

Help Support CattleToday:

Update on my selling bull calves. Winter of 20-21, I had orders for 5 bulls. And sold 7.
This past winter, I had orders for 4, kept 5 as bulls. Sold all 5.
1 was in my showstring, and he was Supreme Bull at one fair and Grand Champ Bull at NYSF. He went home with new owner, a PB Simmental breeder.

Moses - unless there is something major different with your breeds - yes - sire and dam have to carry the red gene for the calf to be RED. Your calf does look red. But, on some hetero-black calves, they are born mousy, reddish colored but turn black. I can always tell, because the nose, eyes, hooves & most of the tail will be black

An updated photo of the red heifer calf {click here}.

My final Fall calf was born Sunday, November 13 {click here}. It's a bull and the AI sire is Bieber Deep End B597 RAA# 1694338. Born unassisted.

This orange heifer calf was a surprising color {click here}. She is out of a black cow and the white bull previously mentioned. I might breed her to Lincoln Red and expect a red colored calf. It's hard to find an orange colored bull. Other suggestions?

Here's another pic of some calves {click here}. Calving resumes in January. The BWF cow is due January 23, 2023.

Had a pretty good fall calving. Only lost 4 calves out of a this group of 85.. not great, but I'll take it.

Pastures are all played out and started feeding hay earlier this week. I'm always shocked at how much hay our fall herd eats compared to our spring herds. Over 50% more, and they wish that that % would go up up even higher.

We did well with hay this year, so I'm probably spoiling them a bit compared to years past.
