Talk to your vet about what is recommended for your area. Geography matters.

Are you seeing any advantages to using lepto in your calves?
We've used it on and off over the years and haven't noticed a difference. It was recommended to give it so we have the last few years. I think it's 75 cents extra so not that big of a deal. We had a guy help us this year that runs one of the bigger ranches here and he quizzed me about giving it. He said they do not give lepto to young calves. Not sure we'll use it next year.
Also thinking we'll stop the Scourguard shot this year. It's $5 a hd and I haven't seen a benifit to giving it. Vaccine prices keep creeping up so the extras are getting pricey.

We used to have horrible scour trouble. When we started using scour guard our vet told me that every year we would see fewer and fewer cases until after several years scours wouldn't be a problem anymore. We just had to break the cycle. He was right. After 4-5 years we quit using it and no longer had a problem.

I just read a post in Cow Talk on Facebook about a 4-month-old heifer calf with reddish/wine colored urine. As of yet, they haven't posted an update after seeing the vet, but there were a number of comments saying it looked like an overworked kidney caused by lepto. My vet has never suggested vaccinating for lepto in my calves but maybe something we should discuss. For later. The big round up is Sunday!

I work rotating shifts so may go a week without getting a good look at the cattle during calving season. We had a few get the scours so started giving the shot. We are able to watch them better now so it's not as big a deal to catch it early. We will still give it to any heifers we keep though.

I listed Ultrabac 8 for the cows in the Fall. We never blacklegged our cattle before this year but it was recommended we start. It's another vaccine I don't feel the Mother cows really need. Do y'all blackleg Mother cows?

Yes. Aforementioned Covexin 8 (or preferably Cavalry 9). You don't think you need it until you lose one from Blackleg. Mother Nature changes, the ground changes and shifts, regenerates, resurfaces. I believe there was a post on here a few years ago about someone losing cattle in the northwest part of the US to Blackleg.

Our vet supply guy hit me up this year about why I never blackleg the cows. I told him I didn't think they needed it. He priced it to me for around .60 cents a hd. Probably worth that to pass it along to the newborns.
