I am getting ready for next years fair, and i plan on showing a steer and a heifer. The question is that how old do you want your beef steer to be at the fair. The general range is 1100 to 1400lbs. What month should they be born in so that they reach that in the middle of August?

thanks

when is your show? but angus influnced calves always do good. and black calves are the real easy to groom and fit since you don't have to match paints haha.

18 months is about right- so you would want your calf born in the early part of the year PRIOR to your fair. Say Jan-Mar '07 for next year. That is a good rule of thumb, but can vary a bit depending on the frame & rate of gain.

so if I buy a spring calf, it should be in the 1100-1400 lb range for a mid august fair??

as long as you feed him/her right, should be ok, ;-)

Mt steersinor show are 14-15 moths old. Our weigt range is bou 11-1300 and most are upwards of 1200. personally hav never had steer over 14 1/2 months old at our show and have never done worse than winning my class.
