Longhorns are known for being easy breeders, highly fertile, excellent milkers and mamas, etc.

Every one of our Longhorn cows and 1st calf heifers produce a calf. We even had 2 of our "middle aged" cows have 2 calves each during 2006. First one in January, second one in December.

For 2006 our "calving rate" was about 110%. Our females usually breed back on their first post-calving heat or shortly thereafter on next heat.

1st calf heifers are put with a bull at 13-14 months of age to have a healthy calf on the ground by 2 years of age.

i have heard that about longhorns.

is there a particular bloodline that is beefier than others that are not bred just for horn production?

That's a hard question to answer! LOL!

"Most" of the "beefier" Longhorns are the result of out-crossing to different Longhorn bloodlines over the years. About the only Longhorn "family" that is not promoted as a "beefier" line is the Butler lineage (which is known for producing a lot of horn with small hips).

Look at your ITLA and TLBAA breed association's journals to see samples of cattle and bloodlines. Also, look at some of the better Longhorn producer's websites to see photos and lineage examples.

You want to see photos of sires & dams in "Pasture Condition", not the bathed, brushed, groomed, pampered animals in the Show pictures.

One resource for dozens of ranch advertisemets and websites is the http://www.longhornsalepen.com There you can see what a variety of breeders are producing and numerous ranches have lineages posted.

Good luck in your search!

we have a milking shorthorn cow whos 17 and has a calf every nine months

Considering the average gestation length is 283 days, or about 9 months and 10 days, then that cow is truly remarkable. If she started calving at 24 months and only had single calves at each birth then she should have had 20 cows by now.
Care to revise your statement or do you really mean she has produced that well?

she does produce that the last calf died tho was a moon gazer never had that but its not her fault she we kept her

Pretty simple, she bred back before she calved
