epds

Help Support CattleToday:

Basic epd's are calculated by taking 1/2 of each of the parents and adding them together.
Other factors like individual performance and sibling performance will then affect that basic epd.
For example a cow with a birth weight epd of +4 mated to a bull with a birth weight epd of +6 would give the calf a basic epd of (+2 and +3) +5. If the calf was above the breed average or below by several pounds that basic epd would be adjusted, and the accuracy raised.
Jason Trowbridge
Southern Angus Farms
Alberta Canada

what if the sire and had come out of a multi
breeding system? I receive epd from our breed
assoc. Richard, it's a complicated formula to generate EPDs. You probably should ask this question of your breed association. In the Angus breed, if the parents, grandparents, etc., didn't have EPDs, that means no performance data was reported to the Association. There likely won't be any information on them in the AHIR data base and generally the first EPDs are quite low. As you report calves, hopefully, they'll come come up. Good luck.
.: what if the sire and had come out of a multi
: breeding system? I receive epd from our breed
: assoc. Birth weight is how many more or less pounds the offspring are expected to weigh than the breed average, 205d is expected weaning weight more or less than the breed average, and same for 365 day wight. It is important to remember that you can not compare different breeds EPD's unless you have acees to an accross breed EPD calulations.
mike
