Eminent Domain

Though it was a very close decision, I'm not a bit happy about it. It seems to me that big business, corporations, those with political power are getting things their way too many times lately. I can't imagine anyone wanting my place so far from town, but this decision bothers me a lot. Did you see where Governor Jeb Bush is wanting to investigate the Terri Schiavo case some more? That seems like blatent use of political position to me.

Yes, I heard something about that.

A good friend of mine's brother is going thru a pretty big ordeal with the CPS and state right now. These men and their family are good people and fellow ranchers in south Texas. Another example of government intervention in private affairs.

Don't get me started on that b.s. I'll bet gov. rick perry (I can't muster enough respect to even capitalize his name) and his developer cohorts are grinning from ear to crooked ear over the SCOTUS ruling.

BTW, Dick, I was at the protest rally at the capitol. I am now thoroughly convinced that with the exception of maybe 3 or 4 of our rep's we need to completely clean house in Austin.

I had read something about Governor Rick Perry's ambitious plan, but didn't know it was actually being put into place. When is he up for re-election? How is it being paid for?

were you referring to the war of northern aggression?

anyways, unbelievable that they made that decision. I was all up in arms about it today when I was working at the VA and told as many of our good WWII vets about it as possible. Some of these guys said that is not the kind of decision that the country that they defended all of those years ago would make. I tend to agree.

Sad day when Starbucks, Walmart, and Amoco can set up camp in your (former) back yard just b/c they want to make a buck doing it. It simply is not right.

I know this, when election time comes around, I'm going to find out just who of our elected officals voted for this and write "letters to the editor" of thier respected papers and let the people know about this garbage. This is bull*%^(.

You got that right!!!
If it all had worked out right, we'd be sending our taxes to Richmond, not Washington D.C.
I believe this is just another step to what we've all been told "New World Order" I'm absolutely shocked that this has happened, and am afraid to guess what could be next.
Supreme Court Justices should be Elected, not appointed. What kind of Country are our Kids and Grand kids going to inherit when we're all gone? With a decision like this being made it makes me feel a big bite of Democracy was stolen from us.

this corridor thing is scary..our farm is in a county that has the orange markers running through it, i know they have spoke of highway 69,, we aint 1/2 a mile off of 69. our farm has been in our family since 1927, but it dont matter how long it has been in the family, cuz if my land was just bought last week, i still wouldnt want the gov. forcing their new highway through it, and now to be able to take your property so some big corp. can make more money, by greasing the hands of the politicians to get what they want,,,it is absolutly crazy...

I have been hearing about this on talk radio for the last year or so. It makes my blood boil for someone to be able to walk in and say they want what you have and you must turn it over. There are so many crooked politicians that will take money under the table, that this probably will happen a lot more in the future after this case. They like your view, so they want your land. Taking land from someone is a major burn that stays with you for a very long time. I am sure that some people won't take it lying down. For the reasons they state they can take your land, it can happen at any time. This sounds more like a third world deal.

I'm not one to offer a hand out to anybody, only a hand up and this in my mind is just one more way that people are going to have to get handouts, the whole case from what I hear started because they want to knock down some "cheap" "trashy" homes so that they can put a SHOPPING MALL in... this all for the "betterment" of the community, well what a crock of BS, if the community really wants bettered, take the money for the shopping mall and help to clean up the neighborhood instead of running their capatalistic machines through it all and leaving dozens of families homeless. All for most likely a Wally World... now that this bill has passed there is no safety for any property holder in the country. For all we may know they may want to put a shopping center on any one of our best pieces of ground and if we don't sell it, they'll take it anyways...

Jake I saw pictures of these homes on TV. From what I saw, they aren't cheap or trashy looking, just solid middle class houses. The whole thing is that if they take the places, the shopping mall will pay way more in property tax on the same piece of ground. Some of these folks say they won't leave. It's gonna be interesting to see how it turns out. I'm not a Derry Brownfield groupie, but seems like the old boy may have been on to something. This stuff has to be stopped or there won't be an end to it.

I hadn't heard what type or class of housing development it was but a home is a home in my opinion. all they want is the extra $$ it has nothing to do with the good of the public. tell ya what they couldn't take me off my land without pryin' the gun out of my hand if it's not for the true good as in something militarily important. DEFINATELY not for a damn shopping center...

It seems like owning land these days is more & more like renting it from the goverment. Taking folk's land for development is just plain wrong. These land owners should at least be paid very well for their property. If they had to be paid 2-3 times it's actual value the local goverment might think twice before running them off of their land.

The only way we can fight this now is at the local level. Ask how the candidates stand on the issue and let them know you ain't voting for them if they even remotely back the idea, and if they ever vote in favor of it in your area they will be out of a job. Tell everyone about it. When the word gets around that it is a tender spot for the community. They won't be as able to comit the theft. And that's what is "Theft" Someone said on the radio," now I know how the American indian felt." In our little town they have started taking old houses from old folk who can't keep them up. City gets them torn down and they keep the land as payment for cleaning it up. I'm telling you folks we need to clean house in our county and we will next election. I ain't voting for anybody who has been there before. I am officially off the soap box now. Carry on.
