Ear tags

Help Support CattleToday:

It kind of depends on the cow. If she is an excitable sort and never been tagged before, put a halter on her and tie her head to the side of the chute, short (otherwise she could throw her head and rip her ear or nail you). If this is your first shot at tagging, I would recommend a halter anyway. Then load your ear tag gun, grab the end of her ear, position the tag about 2 inches in (maybe, I can't judge distance so I could be wrong on that last part), in the center of the middle web and let her fly. If she has already had a tag, you can simply re-tag using the existing hole.

A word of advice:
Becareful not to tag her in one of the major veins in the ear, or she'll bleed like a stuck pig for a while. Not lethal, but kind of messy.

Just position your tagger between the two veins and squeeze away (keeping your face away from her head - you don't want to be bleeding from a busted nose when she jerks her head up after the tag is insterted).

Personally, I really like the 'Double Z' brand of eartags, as opposed to the button types. Seems they are less prone to ripping them out.

Here's a link to their websites:

Take care.

ps. The Z No-Fade Ink Marker is excellent. After trying other brands with various success, have found this one to last longest with legible results due to least fading of ink (nope, not getting paid to endorse their products...just found that they work very well).
