We are making plains to drill seed in the pastures in mid Aug. If we can get anough rain to let the drill go in the ground.
Is this about the best time to sow seed ?

Depends on what you're drilling in. You local seed monger, NRCS office, or extension office should be able to tell you what is the best time for seeding what

You must have some good dirt. Down here a drill won't do it. We use a no till.
Or maybe thats what you mean. If so you may try and find one with a shank that is heavy enough to hold up. The old "pasture dream" planters held up great in dry heavy soils. The biggest problem is that those dry clods do not compact very well over the seed.
Sure would be nice if you got it in there before/if it rained.

We use a "Tye" no till seeder in the fall. Sometimes we have to put the weights on it, others we don't, depends on moisture.

Ryegrass, which is what we plant, are very tough seed and will lay there until they get the moisture to germinate.

I am amazed every year at the stand we end up with after seeding in dry, hard ground.
