Probably not to everyone's taste but this is our new herdsire, Quasi Q80. Purchased in October 2020 as a 13 month old, selected for his good carcase figures (EMA and marbling top 5%), low birthweight, average growth, good milk, good calving ease and short gestation EBVs. All the things we were looking for. He is a son of Melaleuca Locky (Au) that can trace his lineage to several well known Aussie sires including Monterey Marshall (pictured in Backbone ranch post)

Pictured the day after he got off the truck after a 60 hour journey including a 3 hour ferry crossing between the North and South Islands, age 13 months.

He was put to work almost straight away to 19 cows aged 3 to 10 yrs.
On 8th December we gave him another 5 yearling heifers who were already hopefully mated as we had sold the bull they were mated to, so herd of 24 females.

As at 10th January now aged 16 months., and finished the mating season!

It appears all his cows are settled in calf, proof will be when we PT later this month. What has to be remembered is that our farming is all grass, no supplementary feed apart from hay/silage in winter only, for all stock, bulls included! Our aim is to breed yearling bulls suitable to use in the dairy heifer mating market, so he meets their criteria for easy calving, but with added carcase quality.

I would say that he has really come around in the last few months after his delivery to you. He has some interesting EBV numbers too! Let us know what his calves do for you. I am not familiar with many of their bulls, except for Melaleuca Entertainer, but he was a very nice looking bull.

Calves due August!
Backbone Ranch, the breeder has also used Melaleuca Entertainer and has 158 calves registered to him in NZ.

Melaleuca Locky, the sire of Quasi, has better EBVs and is a trait leader for carcase weight. Here is the blurb from the sales catalogue. The figures have changed since the September figures below and he is now +3.7 for birth (breed average). We are hoping for some moderate size beefy calves from our cows with plenty of IMF and EMA!
