Down calf

Help Support CattleToday:

When I was raising bottle calves in Illinois that happened a LOT. (Getting calves from people that didn't want to put them down themselves.

Sounds like the best option to me also.

I agree also. No sense throwing good hard earned money away on a animal with an unknown problem, plus you have to take the animal into account too, its quality of life, etc...

I took a heifer calf to the vet once (never will again) they said they could put in on fluids, bring it around, do this do that, after 3 days, I went in and brought it home, they gave me all the stuff to keep the treatment going, IV's, shots, but the blatant truth was they had no idea what was wrong with it, and instead of telling me that, being honest, they ran up a $200 vet bill for me, it burned me big time :x :x Within 4 hours of getting it home it died! You have to weigh the cost against how much the animal is actually worth, and even though heifer calves are high, (thats why I took it in) not everything is curable, and not everyone tells the truth.

Yet another lesson learned!

Hope it goes as you choose.
