double muscled

i have heard this before what is double muscled ?

It's the gene for heavy muscling shown by such breeds as Belgian Blues and to a lesser extent Piedmontese.

It also shows up occasionally in other breeds.

A drawback is that sometimes the calves need a caesarean section to be delivered.

The Piedmontese have a naturally occurring double copy of the Myostatin gene, the double musceling in the Piedmontese does not manifest until the calf is about 6 weeks old, thus the Piedmontese do not have the calving difficulty that some of the other double musceled breeds have. This tenderness gene is passed on (one copy) when crossed with other breeds making that beef more lean and tender also.
