I am thinking of getting some Hereford Cattle. What are some diseases i might need to be aware of and how can i treat them. Also, what are some speacial conditions and treatments that Herefords require?

Herefords really don't have any more problems then other breeds. Some bloodlines have problems, but not Herefords in general. Pink eye and prolapse are probably the main problems with SOME Herefords. We have had one old girl that prlapsed but the only pinkeye we've had was in a black Angus. Although Herefords aren't noted as being good milkers, we've been impressed that such a dinky little udder can produce enough milk to raise the size calves that they do. The Herefords and Hereford Angus crosses all wean calves in the same weight range, within around 50 lbs. but that isn;t corrected for weaning age/birthdate. For disposition, Herefords ar very hard to beat, they can tend to become too much of a pet and they're sometimes hard to herd because they dont have a flight zone. This site "http://groups.yahoo.com/group/herefordtalk/" discusses the breed pretty evenly, i.e. not overly biased.

Thank-you for your reply it has been most helpful. How much would a hereford cost me to buy?

I can't addrss the price issue. It depends on if they are registered or not, age, open pairs or three in ones. Locality also enters into the equation. Unregistered Herefords in this area sill for less then half of what they sell for 75 miles west of here. The fall production sales are about to get started. Check out "http://www.hereford.org/" for more information
