Dewormer

Has anyone used the meal type dewormer? The vet sells 50lb sacks of meal with added dewormer that will treat 8000lbs of cattle. How do you know if each cow gets her share of the meal, and, how do you make sure a hog cow will not get too much. The vet said it has salt in it which will limit the hogs, is the salt effective in this area? I want to try this this year, but would like to hear some thoughts. Thanks

Salt as a limiter is very common with supplements. It works on most animals, but just like people, there are those that seem to be salt fiends. Just for the reasons you have mentioned is why we worm individually with a different type of wormer each time.

About the only way you can "guarantee" each animal gets his/her proper share of the eatable de-wormer is to feed each animal separate and individually. No competition from other cattle.

We use Dectomax and/or Ivomec injectable de-wormer spring and fall. Works great. We figure about .80 cents per 100# animal weight with each injection, including disposable needles.
