Does anyone from Texas know of someone in the central Texas area that does dehorning? On Brahman influenced cattle? A friend that I sold a ranch to a few years back has Brahman cows running with Hereford bulls. He's trying to keep some of the good heifers to sell in a special sale, but the guy he used to have come out and dehorn no longer does it. He doesn't need the fancy surgical dehorning like we do for show cattle, but someone that does a good job. Anyone?

Appreciate the help!

Use an Angus bull next year -- that will help
But then he won't have those good Brahman- Herford mama's

Good/Brahman/ hereford are 3 words you never see together
Stop the madness and get an Angus Bull

I'm not talking about myself... this is for a good friend. I hardly think he'd appreciate an answer of "get an Angus bull" to help him solve his problem.

My cows are Angus and my bull is a Mytty in Focus son. In this area a Brahmam-Herford F1 is about the best thing to have. I have the angus because thats what the market has wanted.

Where in Central Texas?
A lot of the guys that work for a vet moon lite things like this on the side. I take mine to the vet as they use a pain killer. Brahman and Brahman influence cattle have long memories so I want the process to be as painless as possible. I also want to do them as young as possible. The vet here charges $20.00.

How long are the horns?
Just got a couple of our steers done that were missed at birth. Used the "scoops" and an electric iron to burn them.
We use de-horning paste at birth.

Ok so an Angus bull wasnt a good reply to your post -- tell that guy to get that little wire saw and runnem thru the chute use nose tongs to turn their head both dirctions and saw them off up short and get a branding iron to cauterize the blood vessels -- simple -- ya dont need to hire a specialist for a little job like that. Heckk the Vet can do it if all else fails.

Bulllady, do you know about how old and how large these heifers are? If the horns are still small the scoops will work as well as anything. Check with other local ranchers. I bet there is a good "top hand" on one of the ranches that would probably do the job for nothing just to help someone out.

Not sure how big of horns you are talking about. Occasionally we miss some at branding and we wind up dealing with them just before weaning or at weaning. If the horns are two to four inches long, we put castrating bands on them. We use the little green bands and put two on each horn just in case one breaks. Slide them down the horn. Right where the horn meets the head you will find it soft and the band will want to constrict as soon as it reaches this point. It will make it's own indentation right behind the horn and stay there. The horns will fall off in 7 - 14 days usually. Sometimes you get a little blood if they arn't quite ready and the animal bumps it loose. It will be very little blood and nothing to worry about. These calves will have an eight way ( like all) at weaning with a tetanus just to be safe.

Not sure if this is your situation, hope it helps.

Now that I got that off my mind I just bought me a pair of behorners and do it myself when the horn is small .

GOOD ADVICE work them slow and easy build up their trust and they will be a very good cow I think they are more of a one person cow than other breeds
