Death of calf by fire ants

Has anyone experienced this yet? We just had this happen to a 21/2 old bull calf, that was in excellent condition. The night before he was running around, doing normal calf things, and the next morning he is laying on the fire ant bed, swelled up, and dead. Does anyone have an explanation as to why he'd stay there, or does anyone know a sure fire way of removing these fire ant hills effectively and permanently? Thanks for all responses.
