Sorry danl, didn't mean to highjack with my last post.
To answer you, everyone that posted dogs was probably right. I thought of heart attack which can happen and leave no sign of struggle but usually if the animal dies and then is eaten by a predator the birds are the ones who find it first (at least that is what happens here) and then the eyes are gone. Coyotes will look for swarms of birds and then know that dinner is served. Sorry about your loss and I hope you get whatever took down your calf.
