I fed the cows this morning. That went quick. As I circled back along the feed row I counted cows. I came up one short. I could have had my count wrong but didn't want to drive around any more with the feed truck. So I took it back to the barn and parked. Hopped on the quad to check the cow count. As I pulled away I noticed it was snowing on top of the hill and looked to be headed this way. Ran out on the quad. It started to snow. Went passed the cows in the direction they had come from this morning. The field has a little roll to it. Enough that you can't see the far end. No cows down there. Back to count the cows. By now it is snowing pretty good. Big wet flakes. Before I got the end of the line the dog jumps off the quad, runs to the far end of the cows, and pushes the last 8 or 10 back towards me which mixes them all up. Then she sits there looking at me like she is saying did I do good? Just what I want on a wet snowy morning. Back to the other end where the cows aren't all stirred up. Stay on the quad you mangy mutt. This time the count comes out right. Back to the house to get out of the sloppy wet weather.

I can relate to that. Even if I get to call the dog off I lose my count straight away.

Here is a poem about a dog I used to have-

Shanti Sylvester Silvia Snout
Always dumped the garbage out
Wads of paper, rotten meat
Gloppy clumps of Cream of Wheat.
The garbage flooded to the hall
It cracked the ceiling, broke the wall.
But by then it was much too late
The garbage reached across the state
And Shanti met an awful fate
There in the garbage that she ate.

can I borrow that?

About a week ago when I started feeding hay to the calves my dog followed tractor and chased one calf through the fence in with the cows. It was kind of nasty that day so I waited for a better day to sort him off from the cows. Now I keep the dog in the house when I go out with the tractor. I have been working on the down, but were not there yet.
The funny thing is when I go out Jake wants to play, nipping at my hands. I went meow and he took off like a bad out of **** looking for the outside cats.

Don't say "moo" or he'll go looking for the calves.

As Baxter once wrote…..

And just when you start ta go braggin',
On that cow eatin wonder you're draggin
The dog you admire
Will pi55 on a tire
Or go lick his nutz in the wagon

The dogs know better, they just do it anyway.
I never have the problem on foot, seldom in the ATV or tractor, but often in the truck with the windows up.
They are more independent with that glass separating them from the Boss.

I can't count cattle, dog or no dog. That's what my boss says, anyway..

He loves to tell the story of when I first started. He sent me to count calves that were running, eating, drinking, laying down, or behind equipment. Try as I might, I couldn't keep track after 13 from outside the pen and was told not to go in. I went back to him and told him I was too short, too far away, and they were moving too much for me to get past 13 and keep track from outside. The way the bossman tells it (to EVERY truck driver, cowboy, sales rep, day worker, vet, vet tech, or ranching adjacent human) is that I returned with a confident count of 13 when there was actually close to 60. I hate that story.

Also bossman every time we load or unload, ship or weigh, etc.: " Kati, get up there and get a good count."

I get it. I asked Roy the border collie how many sheep we had, bring them back to the barn and round them up. She gets back and ask her how many sheep Roy? She says 30, how can that be Roy we only had 27 yesterday she says you asked me to round them up.

Even Roy maths better than I do.😭😭😭😱

You are not alone Kati, counting cows is not my specialty.

Counting cattle is hard, for me nowadays. I'll have a count in my head and forget whether it's the number I have already counted or the number I'll start off with next.
The other morning, I was trying to get a baby calf count while the cows were in the barn lot eating. Most calves were still outside the lot, but few had come in amongst the cows. A little calf from a Brahman Longhorn cross cow was running around everywhere first I see him then the next count I wouldn't. Finally thought I'm gonna remember I've seen him he is here somewhere. Next attempt at counting, 1 short. Walk back through the cows and out he runs, there's my count I knew I had missed him that time.
Counting sheep and lambs is even harder than cattle. Some days I just accepted an approximate guess on them.

At the sale in La Grande they will bring in 30-50 peas in a pod of black steers at the same time. The ring man, clerk, and another lady count them as they come in. The ring man tries hold the door just opened a bit to only allow one or two at a time in but some times the calves give them the bums rush and knock the door wide open. Sitting in the stands I will try to cont them but I can't count that fast most of the time.

It's harder to count individually. If you can learn to see them in groups of five and count by fives it's easier to keep up. Once you start it gets easier as you practice.

I am fairly good at one or two at a time, get much more than that going past me and I lose count. Dad used to be really good at counting, he could count then 4, 5 or 6 deep as the went buy him, but I also think he was horseback when he counted. Maybe a little elevation helps. IDK.

That and if the boss man says there's 342 head then that's just how many there are 😂
