I thought this might be a good place to post this. I am raising a couple of young replacement Black Angus heifers. One seems to have scaling skin mainly around her neck. I see these rather large flakes of what appears to be skin. At first I thought it was just from her rubbing on trees and such but now as I look at it I am pretty sure it is flaky skin.

Anyone know of a treatment for it? Head and shoulders

If these are just pasture cattle, I would just ignore it.
But, you can use a conditioner for them. Mane & Tail Conditioner can be mixed with water (or straight) & rubbed on the dry area. Does not need rinsing off.
If you are washing them with soap, they need to have a vinegar & water rinse afterwards to remove the soap properly

Well, I am raising them for replacements. It just looks like it could be irritating. I was told when I bought these two that they had been wormed, and vaccinated. I don't think they had either. I wormed them (Ivomec) about three weeks ago and it seems to be clearing up some now. I suspect mange (Mites). I will let you know if it clears up. I suspect I may need to hit them with another worming session in a month or so. I will probably use about 1/2 dose this time though.
Thanks for the input.

If a pour on dewormer was used, it can "burn" the skin & they will have large flakes of skin shed.
Mange mites usually make an area that is something like dried cottage cheese. But, yes, mites is a possibility.

The pour on was only from the shoulders to the tail bone. I can't say that I have ever burned the skin from using a pour on wormer but then again I usually worm and release. :-) The "dandruff" is from the ears back to the front of the shoulders. I can feel little bumps on the skin and see missing hair on the back of the ears. The flakes seem to be dissipating some now.

Cattle get lice in the winter and it results in hair loss around the neck. Summertime does away with lice. They sometimes have some scaling with lice. However, as as already been suggested, if they're just pasture cows, you can probably ignore it.

my first guess would be lice. second guess would be she's sticking her neck through barbed wire to eat grass around the edges.

Thanks for all the replies. Like I said I usally catch and release until next working time. These two are an experiment. I wanted a couple here at the house to raise as replacements and gentle down to become leaders. I have done this in the past and works pretty well. I get good healhty cows and a couple that will come to me when called bringing the rest of the herd.

I blasted her with another round of Ivmec and she seems to be doing much better with the skin. I am sure it was mange. Also if you see my parasite post I have identified the worms and should have that fixed also.
