Cows do fill their bags before calving but it is not wise to do so because calves need the colostrum as soon as it is born. Cows will stay in milk production but gradually decrease as the calf gets older. Within a few days after a calf is weaned, the cows starts to dry up..usually takes a week...seen a cow didn't dry up for a month! Cows are weird creatures..

Normally 3-4 days, a week at the longest. As soon as the chlostorum has stopped being produced they will go back in the milk tank.

actually guys a cow makes colostrum only for 2-3 milkings after calving. the calf will only be able to absorb the antibodies for about the 1st 24-30 hours but that tails off from a high absorbtion rate in the first 12 hours. in the case of a dairy cow who was dry treated at the end of her previous lactation depending upon which product was used and how long she was dry she will be going back into the tank in 6-8 mikings(2x/day)
