I'm trying to get one more small cutting of hay this year before it gets to cold. I wanted to get a cut before frost sets in. I was wondering how tall my gras needs to be to make an acceptable square bale. What is the shortest I should cut? I'm afraid I dont have very many weeks left.

You may not want to cut it while it is in it's winterizing stage. You can kill the chance of having it grow back properly next year. On the other hand, it won't hurt to let your cattle in to graze it during the winter months. Of course that takes at a minimum an electric fence and a water suppply. ISU research has shown that cattle will forage through 8 inches of snow as long as there isn't an ice layer. (Or a full hay ring!)
