is anyone familiar with cushing disease (not sure if I even have the name right). Is it a type of founder?

Cushings has to do with the putarity gland. (Spelling?) Yes, some horse are at a higher risk of founder if they have it. Most are insulin resistant, meaning anything with high starch or sugar can cause sudden founder.

There are several things to look for when trying to diagnos it. Horse slow to shed or not shedding out, a bullet butt look, cresting of the neck, are a few.. Your vet could give you more indicators.

 Since Chromium is the insulin carrier in the body. I wonder if they (or some) are Chromium deficient?

One of our ponies has cushings. Unless you keep her blanketed all winter (so she doesn't get such a thick coat), she never sheds out! Last winter we never put a blanket on her...she still has not shed out her winter fur on her legs!
