Cross breeding Charolais

I currently have a small heard of 25 purebreed charolais cows all at 3 years old. I am looking to cross breed them with a breed to produce good heifers to keep and sale off the steers/bulls at weaning age. I am considering Salers or Gelbvieh. Does anyone have experience with this cross or suggestions to a better cross of cattle?

I would chose a good maternal angus bull with good carcass qualities. What brings a premium in your local market for steers and heifers?

I know a man who uses a Black Angus bull with his and he has been pleased with the results. However, he said if he had it to do all over he would use Hereford cows with a Black Angus bull or Hereford X Simmental with a Black Angus bull.

A friend of mine said he read a feed lot report on Char cross and the fed lot operators said the Charxsemmi was the best cross of any thing that came in their lots of ALL breeds and crossbreds. That was their choice and the slaughters choice for LEAN meat. Curt

I had crossbred them with Simmentals and is a good cross, they give excelent steers and great replacement heifers, so if you want to go with Gelbvieh you shouldn't have any problem, you should get very similar results as I got them with Simmies

I currently use a charolais bull on brangus type cows and the calves sell very well. smoke colored with a black nose. I have never kept any heifers so I can't help you much there.

We've cross bred Charolais with Limousin bulls. The calves were excellent. We kept back all the cross bred heifer's as replacements in the commercial herd. Last years replacements had excellent milking ability, very docile, and easy calving. Other then Limousin I would suggest Red Angus. As for the Gelvieh, I prefer the Gelvieh cows crossbred with a Charolais bull.
