Daughter's 4H steer

Red Angus heifer we bought last fall. We needed a few more to breed Shorthorn for Replacement heifers.

Jed is right, we bought it. Although we only paid about $100 for it, we got it at a farm auction.

Thanks, actually, it's not that cold here. Was up around 50 this afternoon. It's been unusually warm here, getting above freezing almost every day. We've only had about 5 really cold days all winter. Nothing growing here yet, but the lilacs are budding and the Canadian Geese are back. About a month early for them.

Great pictures! You have some very nice animals. It has been unusually warm here too, and looks like we have about the same amount of snow cover too. I hope mother nature isn't just saving all the bad weather until calving time, but I have a feeling we might be in for a few nasty storms.

We pounded a post last fall to install one of those scratchers for the yearling bulls, but still haven't bit the bullet and bought one. Grandparents have one at their place and the animals really do seem to enjoy them.

Warm here also. No snow, have had a couple ft several times, but it just keeps melting back to nothing.

Funny how we get used to the scruffy look in winter, but sure is nice when they slick off for summer. I prob look better in summer myself though too. ha

I have one of those brushes here as well, but never put it up. I had a big pole in the yard not being used for anything, so I stacked a bunch of tires over it - they love rubbing on those as well, cause there's some give to them and even better if you use knobby tires.

I got some street sweeper brushes.. I just have to figure out a way to mount the brush and put it somewhere.. I'm sure the cows will love it

Had them before also. Just welded up a couple brackets made out of square tubing, that hung it on a 45* angle to a post or barn wall. Brushes get dried out after a while though, and all the bristles break off.

I like that tire idea Supa! I don't think there's anything worse than a pen of yearling bulls (well maybe a pen of mature bulls) - they just love beating on anything they can find - the troughs, the waterer etc. a pole with tires wouldn't be a bad idea to give them some entertainment.

For mature bulls, perhaps a stack of skidder or large tractor tires would be the ticket. They love rubbing and pushing on stuff that move/pushes back. I've been thinking of hanging some kind of sand bag or whatnot for calves to play with.. A tetherball or buoy full of sand would probably do the trick.

I think that it will save big time on fences and trees. We will see, but they really like it!
