Cows per acre

Help Support CattleToday:

Contact your local county advisor or NRCS office. There are so many variables that have to be considered. Type of forage, animal size and type, growing season, weather or not MIG will be implemented, etc.

Is there a general number that you could give me?

Wouldn't even hazard a guess. I've seen irrigated pasture that won't support 1 cow per 10 acres and unirrigated pasture that works with 1 cow per 2 1/2 acres. It depends on the quality and regrowth along with the animal size and production capabilities. If you have a local doing it, check with him/her/it. But your best bet is still a county agent or NRCS grass specialiast.

Should be able to run 1.5 to 2 pairs an acre if you run an intensive rotational grazing system.
