my husband works on a dairy farm, he has been at this for 17 years , i am wondering how you tell when a holstein milk cow is in heat , especially when they are pipeline milked, he says he just knows....can you help me so i can surprise him, somehow....?

Observation while they are on the patio is the easiest way. Milk production may be down, cow will be restless, maybe calling, act fidgity, vaginal discharge, etc. But a good herdsman does sort of "just know" without being able to pin down exactly what signs he/she may be seeing without Consciously really knowing what they are.
