We have a three year old Angus cow that laid down yesterday and wont get up. She is alert and shows no signs of being sick(no diarrhea, shaking,or swelling etc.) She drinks plenty of water but stopped eating this morning. The vet is out of town till Thursday night. Obviously somethings wrong. Any suggestions as to what we can do to try and get her up until the vet can come out?

Did you temp her? Is she fresh? If she isn't eating then something is wrong, but it is good that she is drinking. Does she try to get up or not even bother? Is she laying normally or sprawled out or at an awkward angle?

Is she bred and when is she due? Sometimes a heavy with calf cow can get paralized from the pressure of the calf. Not common, but has happened. Once she calves, she can get up. But, that should not make her stop eating. Did you take her temp yet (as suggested by LoveMoo)?

Mabey we should've told him to just shoot her, it doesn't look like he'll be back here anyways. At least she was a younger cow, maybe had a chance.

Maybe the cow got up , or maybe they got help from a neighbor and are busy taking care of the cow and do not have time to give us an update.. ;-)
