Just talked to a guy with 1500 lb cows, pissed and moaned about his feed costs. I seem to remember seeing anytime a cow is much over 1000 lbs her feed efficiency starts dropping and it just plain takes more energy to move and maintain all that mass. I've got 950 to 1200 lb cows, and the calves do just fine at the feed bunk. Packers say they want a 1200 lb. beef for their box programs so why are there so many BIG cows out there. 1000 lb cows look small but with the right bull the calves turn out just a little bigger and I can afford to keep them without working in town.
