Cow Down--need advice ASAP

Help Support CattleToday:

Waite just a darn minute

Do not sart Banamine after a course of Dex therapy, you can cause gastric ulcers big time, same goes for Bute.

Hydro therapy, strong stream of water shot at the limbs to increase blood flow may help

Do not EVER give Caldex in the Milk vein, you can get hurt, and hurt the cow if you don't know what you are doing

Also in cases of milk fever cow will be rather flacid and getting Caldex into the jugular is easy using a 18ga 1.5 inch needle/ catheter and a Bell IV set

Nutrition is critical to a down cow, provide lots of soft bedding to promote circulaton the the limbs, and try and provide an elevation such that the weight of the GI tract is pulled back away from the lungs, this will improve the cows ability to ventilate properly, and reduce her effort from labored breathing

Hope you didn't lose her, sorry, :( wish I had more time to spend on this site

We had a beef cow go down after having a large calf, she was down 2 weeks and she got up and walked out of the barn one day. But it was a job. We picked her up every day and massaged her legs had to teach the baby to eat with her down. But most of the time they don't get up we were lucky.
We used Banamine, and Penicillen, most important thing is keep working the legs if you don't they will keep getting weaker. Good luck
