Being the first place when you come out of the canyon and having nice green irrigated meadows, cows coming out of the hills stop at my driveway. Emptied the field yesterday. Four trailer loads of cows left here yesterday to go to their respective homes.. I left the gates open to the field I want them to go to. I am sure by next week there will be more. I had to drive up the canyon yesterday. The fire missed a lot right along the river. The cows haven't missed that area. The grass is mowed pretty short. The reason I went up the canyon is that I had a phone call. A calf of mine was in the corral in Bridgeport. That is about 15 miles from here. And my cows had been on pasture about 8 miles the other direction. I guess if you cut the corner and went in a straight line it is shorter. But still not close and there is a lot of nasty ground between those two points.

A calf that far away? By itself? It was on a mission, sure there isn't more between home and the pickup point? Maybe wait 24hrs.... lol.

He had been there for a while. Was in one man's corral. He had him for over a week thinking that he belonged to one of his neighbors. Finally moved him. Neighbor #2 noticed it wasn't his brand. Had to look up my brand and then find my phone number. And then I was gone over the weekend to a wedding. He is very well weaned. I am sure he was on a mission. First to get out of the way of the fire and then searching for something to eat. Using the scale on a map it is about 16 miles in a straight line. Going from A to B you would cross one two track. This is a pre fire picture of where he would have to travel. It is all black now.
