Can we survive the downturn? Have we enough money laid back to meet all obligations? There will be a lot of notes needing serviced if your highly leveraged. You can try to cut overhead that does not have any thing to do with the cows. An Uncle of mine would tell you to not charge any thing to the cows that they do not deserve. I found a check stub for calves sold in 2010 they were about the price they are now so that was six years ago. I think we may have a long wait before we see anything like we have seen in the past few years. I have been very careful in the machinery area. Newest tractor a 2005 model. Did buy a new hay rake last year. Most of the machinery purchases come from income made from other places. May just get rid of the tax write off and save my money. Looks like the only tax write off is losing money with the cows.

Just a comparison of how ours have done.

I'm expanding. Get ahead or get left behind.

Time to cut the fat off the brisket. Does the tractor and and equipment make/save money? I don't mean to come across harsh, just saying I have a hard time justifying it on my place. Isn't the NetBIO sale in your area, could add some value to your calves.

Good post. There were more $1 per # years than $2 years. This is just normal prices we are back to. Wish we could get a list going back 25+ years for all these people to who think the world is ending. If you get in to cattle expecting $2 beef you are in for a rude awakening.

I'll be glad to see all these people who jumped in because in was high go belly up. The rest of us will be expanding. Droughts and low prices are the best time to expand.

We have a receipt here that has prices from when my great grandpa was selling cattle. I think there is one from the 80's that says he was getting around $400.00 per steer and he raised NICE cattle!

$1.25-$1.50 I can live with. $.90-1.05 is stealing them because they can, IMO. I know there are many factors that affect calf prices but I will continue to bytch about them until this country quits importing foreign beef. Look out for your own people first. There's no crime in that regardless of the situation. The prices we are receiving at the sale barn are lower than they were in 2000 according to Toms's numbers, if you adjust for inflation and input costs.

I bought my first Brahma cow with calf in 1966 for $125.00 . Calves were $.20 . In 1975 calves were $.31
The lowest was in 1956 @ $ .16 In 2006 calves were $1.01 Then in 2009 calve dropped to $.86
In 2010 price was$.88 Then in 2011 price went to $1.10 and has stayed over a $1 since.

I'll be more than happy to export US beef all over the world if people are willing to buy it.

You can move the 2016 price down to 1.10 if you sell today though, they have gotten a lot cheaper lately.

$0.16 in 1956 had the same buying power as $1.41 in 2016

I'm all for exporting. I'm just against importing when it hurts American producers.

Beat me to it.

If looking back at historical returns, if memory serves me, our most profitable years if adjusted for inflation were the war years. Both the First and Second. I'll confirm that though.

This peak was nice while it lasted but who really thought it would stay this way? I know I didn't. I plan on staying in the black. May have to sell the horses, the ostrich and the emu though.

DEAL! Those things are neat.

I mentioned in my original post about buying a new hay rake Paid $5400 Vermeer. I bought a new hay rake in 2002 and paid $2200 for it both Vermeer 8 wheel rakes. .25 cent calves in the past 3/4 ton pickups around $2000. Pickup not very fancy window vents four speed 350 engine heater radio and no A/C. New 1520 John Deere $3200 45 horse power.. Pay more than that for a lawn mower.

The 2016 average was for what was sold this spring and just a few head so far this fall, got some more to sell and might be happy to get the $1.10 average on steers and heifers. should have added the early years there had a few Holstein bottle calves included in the average.
