Cost of cutting and baking hay in East Tn

I'm in East TN and I do currently hay on half's with my neighbor that is in his 70's. It is 10 acres that directly adjoins my property. It was hayed for free for many years I'm sure by the guy who was haying my ground when I bought my property last year.

We had a very dry summer, so I only got one decent cutting in the first of June. His property needs some work but made decent grass mix and clover hay. I make a 5' wide by 4' tall twine wrapped roll, probably tops out around 800-850 lbs. I hayed it on 50/50 and bought his share for $30 a roll. I pay a little for convince and I would love to own the property someday, but he has no interest in selling, so I would like to stay on his good side for a while. I think he appreciates all the work I have done on our joint fence. He doesn't live on the property but drives by and checks in regularly.

I actually cut it over the weekend and made a whopping 6 rolls, but he told me just to keep it for free since the weather had been so poor.

I will say when we bought our 20 acre property last summer in July, I had a guy that cut the hay previously track me down to see if he could get it. I told him yes, but would like for him to leave me some bales (like 10 out of the 50 he made). He balked at that and proceeded to tell me how much diesel and all cost. I finally let him cut it, but that was the last time. The ground is worth something, I don't think I would turn down free hay, but if an owner asks you to leave some or buy the other half, I think that is fair.

My neighbor had mentioned that was an agreement he had previously with another person that had passed away, so I took that and made sure to get him a check in the mail this summer for the first cutting.

Don't know about rates for anything except baling, but in my neck of the woods (Jonesborough area), these are the rates for baling:
4x5 twine - $9 a bale
4x5 net - $10 a bale
4x6 net - $12 a bale
5x5 twine - $12 a bale
5x6 twine- $13 a bale
5x6 net - $15 a bale

Only got 3 people in my area that I'd call commercial hay people that does the mowing+tedding+raking+baling for hire. I know one of them charges an hourly rate for everything except baling. 1 also will do it on the "shares" but I don't know what the percentage rate is.
We also do one place custom... per hour for cutting, tedding if needed, and raking... then by the bale charge...

We had a good hay crop so people are selling 4x5 bales for $20-30 a bale in a lot of cases.

I should have parked my equipment and bought hay. Only problem is half my lease ground would then get stolen so people can keep their ag tax credit.
Can they get the ag credit if you just bush hogged it this year and put the nutrients back in the ground?

I know there is. Just not enough hours in the day for 1 guy to do it all. So if the option is make the hay and get the task complete, or brush hog it and not get it done then I choose the complete option...

Hi Kenny - my internet search turned up this Q&A on hay harvesting. I'm down in Knoxville TN area. I bought 70 acres of property for the house and land 3 years ago. Been trying to find reliable source of having the 60acres of fescue cut. I'd say the quality of the hay would be average - some weeds, no Johnson grass. Back in Nebraska they still find folks to cut hay for 50% of the bales and first right to buy the remaining 50%. Down here in Tennessee, that doesn't seem to be common. I think they'd love to do it for 100%. Any idea what a "win win" typically is? i.e. Is 80/20 still attractive? 70/30? I have no idea what it costs in terms of equipment, fuel, and time.

Thanks
I still see some 60/40. If its good hay thats not bad
